Maharashtra Government has banned use of all kind of ‘Manja’ in kite flying.
The Environment Department of the state informed the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court about the decision to impose a ban on the use, sale and manufacturing of manja. Any traditional method of using glass powder coating over thread has also been prohibited. The decision has been taken as a large number of deaths occurred due to nylon manja and glass-coated manja used for kite flying.
A bench of the High Court comprising Justice Atul Chandurkar and Justice Mahendra Chandwani directed the respondents to implement the government decision and submit a compliance report by June 21. The respondents include Nagpur Municipal Corporation Commissioner. District Collector, Zilla Parishad CEO, Senior Police Officers etc.
The direction was issued in a suo motu petition admitted by the High Court.
