City-based environmental NGO Swaccha Association has petitioned the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench to request a hold on any additional illegal tree cutting in Ajni Railway Colony.
The petitioner has also asked that officials accountable for felling trees be investigated and that the appropriate authority take appropriate punishment against them.
The Association claimed it has filed a petition opposing the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) planned construction of the Ajni multimodal station. The HC had ordered NHAI to refrain from felling any trees without getting consent from the appropriate parties. An comparable project was being developed at Ajni by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA).
RLDA got to work through its contractor on a similar plot of property that is the focus of the lawsuit filed against NHAI.
The garden department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has not given RLDA permission to chop down about 500 trees for the development of the Ajni railway station and construction on the parking space. By cutting down trees on such a wide scale, RLDA has broken both the court’s ruling and the restrictions that were set forth in it, which specifically stated that no trees could be cut down without the consent of the relevant authorities.
The petitioner has sought the HC to prohibit RLDA from engaging in any activity, including tree-felling without getting permission.
