The Municipal Commissioner and Administrator of Nagpur Municipal Corporation Radhakrishnan B made an ambitious plan for the redevelopment of Yashvant Stadium and R P Samarth Chitnis Park. A consultant has been appointed to design the stadiums, which would be commercially viable.
Initially, the feasibility of the project will be studied for making it commercially viable. The Municipal Commissioner is also planning to get complete details of funds for its maintenance. The final decision on implementation would be taken after the report of the consultant is received.
Inspired by Ahmedabad’s ‘TransStadia’ multisport facility Radhakrishnan has proposed the plan.
Yashvant Stadium, designed by renowned planner and builder late Shivdanmal Mokha is an important icon for the city. It remained neglected for the last several years. Radhakrishnan has planned to provide both indoor and outdoor sports facilities at the stadium. Hitnis Park is an old sports arena in East Nagpur. It was used for political meetings and cultural programmes more than sports activities.
The stadiums will have training facilities and convertible sports infrastructure. The redevelopment is being planned through collaborations so that NMC is not burdened with its maintenance.
