In the last one year, Mahavitaran the state-owned power supply company, has detected electricity theft of 18 crores, the department has registered a police case against 296 consumers.The Security and Enforcement Department working under the Regional Division of Mahavitaran has issued a report.
A total of 13,585 consumers were inspected during the period April 2022 to March 2023 by the Security and Enforcement Department. During this inspection, 2719 consumers were found stealing electricity. By taking action against these consumers under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003 amended in 2007, the case of electricity theft of Rs 17.82 crore was brought to light. Also under Section 126 of the Electricity Act 2003 and 7909 other cases, irregularities of Rs 71.78 crore were exposed.
During this, a total amount of Rs 89.78 crore was fixed, out of which Rs 43.82 crore was recovered from the concerned customers. Along with this cases of electricity theft have been registered in various police stations against 296 consumers who have not paid the amount of electricity theft. Mahavitaran has appealed to the citizens to complain about those who steal electricity.
