The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for 2023 have been announced, with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) maintaining their dominance in the top ten positions. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has been declared the best university.
IIT Madras, IIT Bengaluru, and IIT Delhi secured the top three spots. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was the only liberal arts institution in the top 10. At the same time, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has been declared the best university in the country, followed by JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia. Other institutes in the top ten overall categories include IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Guwahati. In the engineering category, IIT Madras claimed the top position. In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Kozhikode were among the top-ranked institutes. The rankings, initiated in 2016, saw an increase in participation from 3565 institutions in 2016 to 8686 in 2023, covering 13 categories. The NIRF team added two new verticals, Agriculture & Allied Sectors and Innovation, to the ranking exercise.
