Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has successfully completed a six-month-long “re-carpeting” project for its secondary runway 14/32, to enhance operational efficiency and maintain high safety standards for air travel. The airport, which operates one of the busiest single-crossover runways globally, handles an average of 950 flights daily. Keeping the runways in optimal condition for continuous and safe aircraft operations is crucial.
The re-carpeting project, which commenced on December 9, 2022, was completed as scheduled on June 10, just in time for the monsoon season. Over 200 personnel, including engineers and workers, dedicated themselves to the project, with the runway being closed for up to 12 hours each day. Adhering to a comprehensive schedule, the team laid approximately 72,500 tonnes of asphalt, upgrading the stressed portions of the 2,210-meter-long (excluding the intersection) and 75-meter-wide runway.
Employing the widely-acclaimed ‘Mill & Fill’ technique, the Adani Group-owned CSMIA ensured meticulous steps, including the precise removal of existing Airfield Ground Lighting fittings through core cutting and filling with quick-set concrete. The successful completion of the project guarantees smooth and efficient operations for the airport’s secondary runway, facilitating safer landings and take-offs for all aircraft.
