After three years of efforts, authorities in Nagpur are finally making progress towards demolishing the Tekdi Flyover. The main hurdle in the process has been the owners of shops located under the flyover. However, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken swift action based on court verdicts, leading to the successful clearance of all shops except for 20 that are still pending handover to Maha Metro.
Out of the 175 shops situated under the Tekdi Flyover, the issue of only 20 shops remains unresolved. NMC aims to finalize the process within the coming week, after which the Metro authorities will begin the demolition of the controversial flyover, often referred to as a “Design Disaster.” So far, 120 shops have been evacuated and handed over to Maha Metro. Another 35 owners have been allocated alternative shops on land owned by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) as per High Court orders. However, 20 shop owners have different issues that need to be resolved.
Once NMC hands over the flyover to Nagpur Metro, the demolition process will commence within the next 15 days. The Tekdi Flyover has long been criticized for its poor design and has caused significant traffic congestion and safety concerns. With pending shop owner issues being addressed, the authorities can now proceed with the demolition, aiming to alleviate these issues and ensure a smoother traffic flow in the area.
