Due to the increase in demand for electricity in the state, Mahavitran has to buy expensive electricity for an uninterrupted power supply. As per reports, around 1.85 lakh units of electricity are being consumed per month due to the lighting done by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation on the occasion of the ‘C-20’ conference.
Weeks after the C-20 summit, the glow remains. Electricity consumption of street lights was 20 lakh 22 thousand units in May-2022. After illumination in May 2023, consumption was recorded at 22 lakh 8 thousand units. It has been revealed that the reason for this high electricity consumption is the circular symbol on the street lights, selfie points, various beautification-related activities and awareness boards put up on city streets. Meanwhile, question has been raised against the appeal made by the government to the citizens to save electricity.
Interestingly, seeing the increasing demand for electricity in summer, Mahavitran purchased as many as 1,340 million units of expensive electricity for uninterrupted power supply to consumers across the state. About an estimate of Rs.6.01 per unit has been purchased by the power board.
The highest power consumption was recorded in two sections namely Civil Lines and Congress Nagar. For the ‘C-20’ initiative, most of the lighting has been done in these two sections. In Civil Lines Division, electricity consumption on street lights was 5.60 lakh units in May 2022 and 6.30 lakh units in May 2023. Electricity consumption increased by 70 thousand units here. In Congress nagar division, electricity consumption was 4.06 lakh units in May 2022 and 4.63 lakh units in May 2023. This consumption increased by 57 thousand units.
