It has come to light that there has been a scam in the fees charged to the patients in Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC). Taking Rs 500 as a fee from patients undergoing treatment in GMC hospital but only Rs 120 was shown in the medical records. About 12 employees were interrogated by a committee appointed by the administration on Monday in this case.
In GMC, BPL patients are treated free of charge; Non-BPL patients have to pay fees for tests, beds and other services. Patients are charged Rs 500 if there is a note of Rs 500 on the patient’s card.
Accounts Section staff came up with a new idea to steal the fees collected from patients. These employees used to collect Rs 500 from non-BPL patients and give them a receipt of Rs 500, but in the GMC account, only Rs 120 was recorded. The administration suspects that this scam has been going on for the past three months.
The scam came to light when the receipt of one of the patients undergoing treatment at GMC was checked.
The GMC administration took notice of the scam and established an inquiry committee. The committee is interrogating 12 employees at present.
