Indian budget carrier IndiGo has made a historic aircraft order by placing a firm order for 500 A320 family planes with European aviation major Airbus. This is the largest-ever aircraft order placed by any airline with Airbus.
The agreement was signed at the Paris Air Show 2023 in the presence of IndiGo chairman V Sumantran, CEO Pieter Elbers, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, and Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International Christian Scherer. The order, which includes a mix of A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR aircraft, will provide IndiGo with a steady stream of deliveries between 2030 and 2035. Currently operating over 300 aircraft, IndiGo has previous orders for 480 aircraft yet to be delivered. With this new order, IndiGo’s order book totals almost 1,000 aircraft, solidifying its long-term growth plans. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. IndiGo’s expansion aims to boost economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India while contributing to air connectivity growth domestically and internationally.
