WhatsApp, a popular messaging app owned by Meta, has once again become a breeding ground for fake news and scams. In a recent public advisory, the Mumbai Police sounded the alarm about a viral WhatsApp message known as the ‘Pink WhatsApp’ scam. The advisory aims to caution users about this deceptive hoax and advises them against clicking on the accompanying link or downloading the app.
According to officials, the fraudulent message circulating on WhatsApp claims to provide an update that changes the platform’s logo colour. In addition, it promises users new and enhanced features to enrich their WhatsApp experience. However, the Mumbai Police has declared the link a phishing attempt, warning that clicking on it could severely compromise personal information or even grant remote control of the device to scammers.
What happens if you click on the Pink WhatsApp link?
The Mumbai Police warns that users who click on the fake link could face various risks, such as:
- Unauthorised use of their contact numbers and saved pictures.
- Financial losses
- Misuse of their credentials
- Spam attack
- Complete loss of control over their mobile devices.
How to be safe from the Pink WhatsApp scam?
The police further share how WhatsApp users can prevent falling for the viral Pink WhatsApp scam.
- First of all, immediately uninstall the fake app if you have downloaded it on your mobile. To uninstall, navigate to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp (pink logo) and uninstall it.
- Always exercise caution and refrain from clicking on links received from unknown sources unless you have verified their authenticity.
- Install or update apps only from the official Google Play Store, iOS App Store, or legitimate websites.
- Do not forward any links or messages to others without proper authentication or verification.
- Refrain from sharing your personal details or financial information, such as login credentials, passwords, credit or debit card details, and similar information, online with anyone, as it can be misused.
- Stay informed and vigilant about the activities of cybercriminals by keeping up-to-date with the latest news and updates in order to protect yourself from their attempts at fraud.
