Union Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed plans on Sunday to introduce new vehicles powered entirely by ethanol and make air conditioning mandatory in truck driver compartments. Speaking at an event in Nagpur, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways shared his recent meeting with the chairman of Mercedes Benz, who had highlighted the company’s commitment to manufacturing electric vehicles in the future.
Gadkari emphasized that the government was focused on promoting alternative fuel options, stating, “We are bringing new vehicles that will run entirely on ethanol. Bajaj, TVS, and Hero scooters will run on 100 per cent ethanol.” He further announced the upcoming launch of Toyota’s Camry car in August, which will be powered by 100 per cent ethanol and will also generate 40 per cent electricity. The minister explained that the cost of ethanol, at Rs 60 per litre, compared favourably to petrol, priced at Rs 120 per litre, making it an affordable and environmentally friendly option.
Furthermore, Gadkari highlighted the need for improved working conditions for truck drivers, particularly in terms of extreme temperatures. On June 20, he signed a file mandating air conditioning in truck driver compartments. Speaking at an auto industry event, Gadkari expressed his concern for the well-being of truck drivers who operate vehicles in harsh temperatures ranging from 43 to 47 degrees Celsius. Despite initial opposition due to potential cost increases, the minister’s decision ensures that all truck cabins will now be equipped with air conditioning.
Gadkari’s announcements reflect the government’s commitment to reducing pollution and enhancing the comfort and safety of transport operators in India. These initiatives mark a significant step towards promoting cleaner energy sources and addressing the challenges the country’s transportation sector faces.
