Bharatiya Janata Party MLC Pravin Datke and former Mayor Sandip Joshi along with workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha staged demonstrations at RTM Nagpur University in connection with the retrenchment of sanitary workers by the University on Monday.
The demonstrations were held in the chamber of the Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari. The VC had removed 40 sanitary workers without any notice. The workers were hired through three agencies and were employed on a contractual basis.
The workers had demanded a hike in their wages from Rs 7,500 to Rs 12,500. The workers were hired from three different agencies. However, after several months the University noticed that the documents submitted by these agencies are not proper. The contract with the agency was terminated and the workers were removed. Out of them, 35 workers were not absorbed by any other agency.
The VC being the principal employer the responsibility of protecting their employment lies with him. During the demonstrations, Dr Chaudhari said that he had called the agencies for discussion on the issue. However, they did not turn up.
