A police chowky near the Santra Market gate of Nagpur railway station has become a subject of controversy and a political issue as residents demand its reinstatement due to the surge in criminal activities in the area. The chowky was dismantled to facilitate Mahametro construction work, leaving the east-side gate of the railway station unsafe, with increased incidents involving vagabonds and criminals. The recent murder of a man on platform number four has further heightened concerns.
Led by NCP leader Nutan Rewatkar, local residents met with Senior Inspector Hrishikesh Ghadge of the Ganeshpeth police station, urging him to restart the chowky. Representatives of the residents accompanied Rewatkar during the meeting.
Ghadge explained that the chowky was removed because it was constructed on encroached land. He added that there is already a chowky at Cotton Market and suggested the need for another one within the Bajeria area.
However, residents have raised allegations that the previous location of the chowky, known as Rege Chowky, is now being encroached upon by an individual with political connections.
The situation surrounding the dismantled police chowky has generated significant concern among residents, highlighting the need for increased security measures and a resolution to the ongoing controversy.
