The Maharashtra government has renamed the Versova-Bandra Sea Link in Mumbai as the Veer Savarkar Setu in honour of the late Hindutva ideologue, VD Savarkar. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has also been renamed as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Smruti Nhava Sheva Atal Setu.
This decision was announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also revealed plans to establish the Swatantryaveer Savarkar gallantry awards, similar to the ones awarded by the Central government. The announcement was made on Savarkar’s birth anniversary, May 28. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Savarkar during his recent ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast, praising his unwavering commitment to freedom and his fearless nature. Modi emphasized that Savarkar’s courage, sacrifice, and determination continue to inspire generations. The renaming of these iconic landmarks and the establishment of gallantry awards reflect the government’s recognition of Savarkar’s contributions to the freedom movement and his ongoing impact on society.
