A voluntary organization Janakrosh, working in the field of road safety held an emergent meeting to discuss issues related to increasing road accidents on Balsaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg.
Members of Janakrosh made some suggestions in an effort to prevent accidents on the Expressway. The meeting was held following the bus accident in Buldana district in which 25 passengers lost their lives. The suggestions include – introducing more emergency exits in buses; placing hammers to break the window panes in case of emergency. It was also pointed out that the width of the walkway at the centre is very narrow, which makes the passengers to move out in the emergent situations. A sufficient number of fire extinguishers should be installed.
The drivers should be allowed sufficient rest before embarking upon long-distance journeys. Janakrosh has alleged that the drivers seldom get adequate breaks for sufficient rest. Periodic refresher training should be imparted to drivers. Mechanisms for monitoring the speed of vehicles and quality driving should be worked out and implemented strictly.
Janakrosh has also advised taking suitable measures to prevent Road Hypnosis, like greenery, restaurants, and toilets at intervals.
