The Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department has contacted the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to comprehensively examine the design and safety measures implemented in sleeper coach buses. This decision comes in response to a devastating incident on the Samruddhi Expressway last week, where a sleeper coach bus caught fire, resulting in the tragic death of 25 passengers.
Vivek Bhimanwar, the transport commissioner of Maharashtra, confirmed the request, stating, “We have approached ARAI to conduct a re-inspection of the design of sleeper buses.” The aim of this review is to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers travelling on these buses.
ARAI, recognized as a premier vehicle testing and certification agency by the Government of India, has previously established the Automotive Industry Standards for sleeper coach buses. With their vehicle research and development expertise, ARAI is well-equipped to analyze the existing safety measures and propose necessary improvements.
The recent incident on the Samruddhi Expressway has raised concerns regarding the safety protocols and design aspects of sleeper coach buses. By collaborating with ARAI, the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department hopes to address these concerns comprehensively and take necessary steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The review process will thoroughly examine the design, construction, and safety features of sleeper coach buses. ARAI will assess the compliance of these buses with the established Automotive Industry Standards and propose any required modifications or enhancements to ensure the highest level of safety for passengers.
