In a bid to optimize accommodation utilization on trains, the Railway Ministry has empowered Zonal Railways to implement a discounted fare scheme for trains with AC sitting accommodation. Under this new initiative, the fares of AC chair cars and executive classes, including Vande Bharat trains, will be reduced by up to 25% of the basic fare. The discount will be applicable based on the occupancy of the classes.
To qualify for the discount, trains with classes having occupancy below 50% during the last 30 days will be considered. Depending on the occupancy, the discount may be provided for the first leg, last leg, intermediate sections, or the entire journey. The fares of competing modes of transportation will serve as the benchmark for determining the discount percentage.
The scheme will be implemented immediately, but no fare refunds will be granted for previously booked passengers. The discounted fare scheme will initially be in effect for a period determined by the respective zones’ Principal Chief Commercial Managers (PCCMs), with a maximum duration of six months. Depending on demand patterns, the discount may be applied for the entire duration or in parts.
The scheme will not apply to special trains introduced for holidays or festivals. Regular reviews will be conducted, and the discount may be adjusted, extended, or withdrawn based on occupancy levels. Additionally, in trains where the flexi fare scheme is currently in place but occupancy is low, the flexi fare scheme may be temporarily withdrawn to boost occupancy before implementing the discounted fare scheme.
