In a society where dance is often seen as a unifying art form transcending barriers of caste, religion, gender, and race, the reality for non-gender normative individuals can be quite different. They face various forms of discrimination and struggle to find acceptance within the realm of dance. However, in Nagpur, a group of 50 transgender individuals has formed the Mudra Dance Group with a mission to assert their presence, gain respect, and entertain audiences.
Originally starting with seven members under the Mamtva Foundation, the Mudra Dance Group has grown significantly. Mohini, one of the dancers, emphasized that transgender individuals possess unique emotions and talents just like anyone else. While traditionally, dance has been associated with grace and performed by women; the group believes that dance is inclusive and that they, too, have the right to establish their identity.
The Mudra Dance Group has already made their mark by being Nagpur’s first art demonstration team to perform at the South Zone. They proudly consider themselves a family of passionate performers and talented individuals. Mohini expressed their desire for society to change and accept them based on their abilities and passion rather than judging them by gender or race.
The entire team of the Mudra Dance Group consists of transgenders, each displaying exceptional talent in various artistic disciplines, including acting, modelling, dancing, and choreography. They have gained respect in their field through their dedication and love for what they do.
The group’s efforts have garnered appreciation from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who recognized their talent and artistry after their performances at the International Gita Mahotsav in Kurukshetra and the MP Cultural Festival.
The Mudra Dance Group’s journey serves as an inspiration, challenging societal norms and striving for acceptance and recognition solely on the basis of their talent and passion.
