Renowned pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Vikram M. Rathi, held a conference today to emphasize the significance of early diagnosis and treatment for sleep apnea, a prevalent sleep disorder affecting millions worldwide.
According to the recent Global Sleep Survey 2023 conducted by ResMed, sleep quality has declined by 22% in 2023 compared to the previous year, indicating a growing concern. Surprisingly, although 89% of Indian respondents acknowledged the positive impact of healthy sleep on overall immune system function, they displayed hesitancy in seeking advice from healthcare professionals.
Conversely, there has been a sudden rise in sleep tracking through smartphone apps and gadgets. The survey highlighted the impact of work-related factors, financial stress, and changes in routines on overall sleep quality. It emphasized the need for proactive measures and education to address sleep-related issues for improved well-being and a good night’s rest.
Dr. Rathi underscored the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in preventing complications associated with sleep apnea, such as high blood pressure, stroke, metabolic syndrome, and depression. He urged healthcare professionals to actively screen for sleep apnea and refer patients for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
The conference successfully raised awareness about sleep apnea and its potential dangers, providing attendees with a better understanding of the disorder. By prioritizing sleep health and working collaboratively, the aim is to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and alleviate its burden on individuals’ lives.
