Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film, ‘Oppenheimer,’ and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of ‘Barbie,’ starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, are set to make their Indian cinema debut this Friday, July 21. With immense hype surrounding both releases, early indicators suggest a robust opening in India.
Advance bookings for ‘Oppenheimer’ began ten days ago and saw an overwhelming response within the first few hours. As of Monday, film trade analysts reported that the movie has already sold 90,000 tickets for its opening day across major cinema chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepoalis, including IMAX screens. On the other hand, ‘Barbie’ started its advance booking relatively later but has shown promise, with 54,000 tickets already sold across the three chains for its opening day.
BookMyShow, a popular ticketing platform in India, witnessed nearly 54,000 tickets being sold for ‘Barbie,’ with cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, and Kolkata leading in bookings. Cinephiles are showing enthusiasm for both films, with 8% of ‘Oppenheimer’ ticket buyers also booking tickets for ‘Barbie’ and a significant number opting to watch both films on the same day. Notably, 22% of ‘Oppenheimer’ ticket buyers were those who had previously watched ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.’
Christopher Nolan, the director of ‘Oppenheimer,’ has expressed satisfaction with the diverse movie offerings in the theatrical marketplace. Although he displayed disinterest when asked about watching ‘Barbie,’ he praised the crowded marketplace and believed it would thrill cinema-goers.
‘Oppenheimer’ is an epic biographical thriller based on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, starring Cillian Murphy in the lead role. On the other hand, ‘Barbie’ is a fantasy comedy inspired by the iconic Mattel doll, featuring Margot Robbie as the protagonist.
As anticipation builds for these two remarkable Hollywood films, audiences are expected to flock to Indian cinemas, making it a thrilling weekend for both the industry and movie lovers.
