After 24 years of struggle, a piece of great news has been received by the residents of Old Bhandara Road. Finally, the IRDP plan for the same has received approval. On Sunday, the people broke into the celebration of D-Day as an excavator dug up the path to construct a 60-foot concrete road.
The activist of Madhya Nagpur Vikas Aghadi said that 24 years back under the Integrated Road Development Programme, 45 important roads were part of road widening, including Old Bhandara Road. Only 42 roads were constructed but two of them were left for widening.
In a ruling dated July 17, 2017, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court backed Aghadi’s argument and instructed administrators to immediately begin the widening work. Although a court order was in place, the administrative machinery moved at its own pace. In order to ensure that the road is widened to 60 feet, close to 200 structures are likely to be destroyed. When the project is finished, the road will allow for easy access via the wholesale markets to Marwadi Square.
