The demolition of the 15-year-old, 812-metre-long Tekdi flyover is completed. Maha Metro sources said that 200 cubic metre weighing 22,000 metric tonne debris had been removed so far. It was carried away in 1,500 trucks. Another 200 cum remained, which would be removed in the coming two days. All the debris has been dumped in the premises of Gorakshan Trust, Wardha Road, Dhantoli, as the trustees had requested for waste material.
Once this is done, Metro would start to work on the construction of the 6-lane road. As land belonging to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is yet to be acquired, the road would be 4-lane in the beginning and later stretched to 6-lane.
The road is a part of the Jaistambh Square Traffic Improvement Scheme. A flyover on Kingsway and two railway underbridges (RUBS) have already been constructed under this scheme. This was the second flyover to be razed in the city after the Chhatrapati Square flyover in November 2016.
The Tekdi flyover was constructed by NMC in 2008 at a cost of 16.23 crore. Many architects and town planners had questioned its design element and functional use.
