Embroiled in a series of controversies the membership of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been suspended by the United World Wrestling UWW). The action was taken due to WFI’s failure to carry out the necessary elections.
WFI, which is India’s wrestling governing body was supposed to conduct elections in June this year. The elections were postponed due to a series of protests by Indian wrestlers and legal petitions moved by various units. The rescheduled dates for the elections for the 15 posts of WFI were announced as August 12. Sanjay Singh, a close associate of the outgoing President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh filed nominations for the post of President. Brij Bhushan is facing charges of sexual exploitation of wrestlers. The affairs of WFI are being managed by the Indian Olympic Association through an ad-hoc committee led by Bhupender Singh Bajwa.
UWW had warned WFI of suspension if elections were delayed.
