According to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) horticulture department, the city has more than 40 lakh trees. The NMC has boosted the quantity of native trees during the past two years.
The Maharashtra Tree Promotion Act of 1975 mandates that a tree census be conducted every five years. This exercise was completed by NMC in 2011. In the city at the time, there were 21.43 lakh trees.
The area of Nagpur city is 222 square kilometers. The city now includes the gram panchayats of Narsala and Hudkesh War.
Therefore, a new tree census is being done. This tree census is being done by GIS and GPS method. What is the exact number of trees in the city after the tree census? The number of these will be revealed after the exercise is over. Still, the municipal corporation estimates that there are more than 40 lakh trees in Nagpur.
The Municipal Corporation is focusing on indigenous tree plantation. It includes trees such as wad, pimpal, umber, moh, bel, hirda, behda, amaltas, kavath, mango, amla, bamboo, karanj, kalamb, etc.
