Based on data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022, Kolkata has been deemed the safest city in India for the third consecutive year, with the fewest number of cognisable offenses per lakh population. Kolkata had the fewest cognisable offenses per 100,000 people in 2022 (86 cases per 100,000).
Compared to last year, there has been a 16% decrease in cases in the city. The city recorded 103.4 cases of cognisable offenses per lakh people, according to NCRB 2021 data. The city has kept the position constant for the third consecutive year. The rankings have been determined after evaluating Kolkata against eighteen other cities with a population of more than two million.
Pune in Maharashtra, with 280.7 cases per lakh people, and Hyderabad in Telangana, with 299.2 cases per lakh people, ranked second and third, respectively, in the most recent NCRB data, which was based on cases reported and shared by the state governments to the Center.
