All new trucks designed on or after October 1, 2025, must have air-conditioned driver cabins, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The ministry stated in a gazette announcement that “…vehicles designed on or after the 1st of October 2025, shall be equipped with an air conditioning unit for the cabin of vehicles of the N2 and N3 categories.”
The cabin equipped with an air-conditioning system must be tested in accordance with IS14618:2022, it adds.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced in July that the draft notification mandating the placement of air-conditioning equipment in truck cabins had been approved. Recently, the minister stated that truck drivers play a crucial role in the transportation sector, which is one of India’s significant industries and that there is an imperative to address issues with their conditions of employment and mental health.
