A leading healthcare provider has performed a first Allogenic Bone Marrow transplant at Wockhardt Cancer Institute Nagpur. It has proved as a boon for the adjoining cities of Nagpur.
A 19-year-old girl from small town of Paratwada in Amravati district of Maharashtra, came with complaint of weakness and was found to have low blood counts, she was eventually diagnosed as severe aplastic anaemia. Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious blood condition that occurs when your bone marrow cannot make enough new blood cells for your body to work normally.
Dr. Gunjan Loney, Haematologist & Heamato-oncologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur said, “Her bone marrow was affected, the only curative treatment option for her was bone marrow transplantation. “
Allogenic Bone marrow Transplant uses healthy bone marrow from a donor to replace bone marrow that’s not producing enough healthy blood cells.
In BMT, conditioning destroys the defective marrow, which is followed by infusion of the bone marrow (graft) from a HLA matched sibling or unrelated donor. The chances of finding a HLA matched sibling donor is only 25%. Fortunately, her 21 year brother’s bone marrow was found to be matching.
Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant is the most likely curative treatment option for SAA and should be the upfront therapeutic option of choice for young patients. The outcome of Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant has improved remarkably during the last decade because of improvements in all aspects of transplantation, including supportive care. This will open doors for patients with blood cancer and other haematological disorders.
Presently, patient is doing well and has been discharged on day 28in stable condition.
Dr. Gunjan Loney complimented the entire Wockhardt Hopsitals, Nagpur BMT team including staff, junior doctors, attendants and administration.“This procedure is highly advanced treatment. The success of bone marrow transplant at our institute will provide new hope to the patients of blood cancer and other Haematological disorders.”, said Dr. Gunjan Loney.
Mr. Abhinandan Dastenavar, Center Head, Wockhardt Hospitals said, ” We are happy that we serve common people as they have access to all advance treatments available in Nagpur that too at our hospital.”
