The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken action against people who haven’t paid property taxes and seized 463 properties in a big crackdown. The civic body is also planning to sell these properties in an auction soon. Property tax is the main source of revenue for the NMC.
Those who haven’t paid their property taxes owe the corporation a total of Rs 10.44 crore. The deadline to avail of a rebate on property tax payments is at the end of December. After that, those who haven’t paid will need to settle the overdue amount plus an extra 2% interest. In the city, there are 6.15 lakh property owners, but only 2.85 lakh of them have paid their property taxes so far.
As per the property tax department, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had set a target of Rs. 272 crores for this financial year. Presently, they have successfully gathered Rs. 159 crore. Additionally, the NMC is actively engaged in a campaign to recoup an outstanding property tax amount of 750 crores.
As part of this campaign, the properties of defaulters are being seized zone-wise. If the taxes aren’t paid, these properties will be auctioned. The NMC has announced various rebates for citizens who regularly pay their property taxes on time. Among the seized properties, the majority are in the Nehru Nagar zone, with 167 properties taken with an outstanding amount of Rs. 3.90 crore. The second-highest is in Lakadganj, with 85 properties seized for an outstanding amount of Rs. 90.60 lakh.
