Commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar on Friday said citizens can refuse a breathalyser test if the device’s blowpipe is not sealed. “To handle drunk driving cases, traffic cops use breathalyzers and have given clear instructions to only use sealed blowpipes during the tests.,” the CP told newsmen here.
While addressing a press conference at Police Bhavan, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar mentioned that citizens’ are free to decline a breathalyser test if the blowpipe is unsealed or previously used. “However, clear directives have been issued to traffic police, mandating the use of only sealed and disposable blowpipes for breathalyzer tests.”
The city’s police chief addressed critical issues related to the city’s safety, particularly in light of the rising COVID-19 cases. The statement highlights the importance of these measures in preventing the spread of the virus. The CP also expressed concern over accidents and traffic congestion, stating, “While there has been a slight reduction in accidents this year, it remains a major concern for us. Our upcoming initiatives include identifying and addressing accident-prone areas to minimize incidents. Ensuring traffic decongestion and effective traffic regulation will be top priorities for the department in the coming year.”
CP Kumar also informed that in 2023 unpaid challans worth Rs. 35 crore are pending. “Steps would be taken to recover these challans but violators must remember that currently everything is app based and once a challan is issued they will have to pay it someday” said the top cop.

For the bandobast of New Year’s Eve, the city police are set to deploy approximately 2,000 officers. Apart from this, targeted efforts against drunk driving are planned at 30 locations, with police posts to be stationed at another 30 spots. The focus will be on key areas, including Dharampeth, Sadar, and other zones, extending to the borders of the commissionerate.
