The sale of Empress Mills land in Nagpur for the construction of a garment park has the approval of the Maharashtra Cabinet. In order to raise money for the parks, the locations of which have not yet been decided, three roughly 3-hectare parcels of land have been identified for sale. The price has been set at Rs 160 crore by the Maharashtra State Textile Corporation.
“It has given the approval to tender process for the sale of plots 1, 2, and 8 of Nagpur’s Empress Mills,” the Cabinet decision states. The decision has been made to sell the land owned by Empress Mills in Nagpur and Narsingji Girji Mill in Solapur in accordance with the Textile Policy. The proceeds from the sale of these properties will go toward building garment parks in Nagpur and Solapur, with the remaining funds going into Textile Development’s treasury.
In 1980 and 1990, the Maharashtra State Textile Corporation (MSTC) decided to close nine mills in phases. In the end, mills closed in 2001–2002.
Presently, the government intends to establish Corporation Parks similar to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Nagpur and Solapur, Maharashtra State Textile Development (MSTDC). MSTDC will be established, and Maharashtra State Powerloom Corporation, Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation, and Maharashtra State Textile Corporation will arise. The department would receive the funds raised after the Empress Mills plots were sold. The Garment Park proposals will then be handled by the newly formed organization, MSTDC.
A committee chaired by the secretary, principal secretary, or additional chief secretary (textiles) was established on Friday to discuss the government’s draft MSTDC. Its Member Secretary is the Deputy Secretary of Textiles.
