In a remarkable medical breakthrough, recently a 58-year-old male resident of Kajali Kanholibara, Hingna, Nagpur, has found relief after enduring 11-12 years of severe pain and discomfort. Referred by Dr. Vallabh Panpaliya, a Family Physician and Social Worker from Hingni to 895 bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC) in Wanadongri- Nagpur; the patient underwent a life-changing surgical procedure.
The patient had a history of excruciating pain and a current-like sensation on the right half of his face and scalp, persisting for over a decade. Despite undergoing multiple treatments, including two dental and maxilla surgeries, the pain persisted, leading the patient to attempt suicide three times.
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a condition characterized by severe pain in the face, and it can be challenging to treat. The fact that the patient had endured such pain for over a decade, including attempting suicide multiple times, highlights the profound impact of this condition on the individual’s life.
He was admitted under the care of Dr. Paresh Korde, Neurosurgeon at the Superspeciality block of SMHRC, the patient was diagnosed with Right Trigeminal Neuralgia with Neurovascular conflict at 5th Cranial nerve on Rt side through an MRI Brain. Dr. Paresh Korde, after counselling the patient and obtaining consent, performed a delicate and intricate surgery known as Microvascular decompression of Rt. 5th cranial nerve.
During the surgery, Dr. Paresh Korde discovered a large PICA (Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery) loop compressing the 5th Cranial Nerve. Skilfully mobilizing the loop, he created a cushion between the 5th Cranial Nerve and the PICA loop, successfully relieving the patient of his debilitating pain.
Dr.Vasant Gawande-SMHRC Chief Medical Superintendent stated that the use of Microvascular decompression of the 5th cranial nerve by Dr. Paresh Korde to address the neurovascular conflict and alleviate the patient’s pain is a testament to the advanced medical procedures available at SMHRC. The identification of a large PICA loop compressing the cranial nerve during surgery demonstrates the precision and skill of the medical team in diagnosing and treating complex neurological conditions.
Upon waking up post-surgery, the patient expressed gratitude, stating, “I will be grateful to TEAM SMHRC & all doctors for giving me a new lease of life, and this is my second birth only possible due to the dedicated and hard work of consultants, nursing, and housekeeping staff. Dr. Paresh Korde has relieved me of unbearable pain.”
Dr.Sudhir Singh-SMHRC Assistant Medical Superintendent added that the patient’s expression of gratitude and acknowledgment of the hospital team’s efforts reflects not only the relief from physical pain but also the emotional and psychological impact that successful medical interventions can have on an individual’s life.
The multidisciplinary team at SMHRC, from Medicine, Neurosurgery , Anesthesia, OT Complex, Nursing, and paramedical staff, collaborated seamlessly to provide comprehensive treatment management.
Dr. Paresh Korde emphasized the importance of patients’ total faith in treating doctors, stating that it not only aids in healing but also instill confidence in doctors to undertake novel medical procedures.
Dr. Anup Marar- SMHRC Director added that this medical success story serves as an inspiring example of how advancements in medical science, coupled with a dedicated and collaborative healthcare team, can bring about life-changing outcomes for individuals suffering from complex and debilitating conditions.
