Chinese manja sellers are trying to sell the banned killer thread (‘Manja’) under coded names on digital platforms to dodge police. Officials keeping an eye on the ‘manja’ mafia’s online activities reveal that illegal packages are hidden with tricky details and use with misleading descriptions marked by ambiguous marketing tactics to lure customers.
Following successful transactions, ‘manja’ vendors are employing children at delivery points to identify police presence and warn clients to postpone transactions until receiving a signal indicating safety. This strategy has raised alarms among senior police officials, considering the potential risks associated with dispatching minors for surveillance and communication during deals.
City Police Chief Amitesh Kumar, under Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 144, has issued an order overseeing a ‘cyber patrol’ to monitor nylon manja sellers. DCP (Cyber) Archit Chandak is leading this mission, emphasizing strict actions against the entire ‘manja’ supply chain, including manufacturers, distributors, stockists, sellers, and buyers.
Chandak highlights continuous efforts to crack the codes used by the nylon manja mafia, with over eight cases registered and seizures amounting to more than 3 lakh. He urges citizens to report nylon manja-related activities through the 112 hotline. Last year, the police recorded 140 cases, seized material worth over 62 lakh, and booked 188 individuals. E-commerce portals have been warned against facilitating the sale of nylon manja, with proactive measures taken by authorities to curb such activities.
