According to a letter from UIDAI, Aadhaar is recognized as proof of identity and proof of address for Aadhar holders. However, it cannot be used as proof of date of birth.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced the removal of Aadhaar from the list of accepted documents for correcting or updating the date of birth.
The UIDAI sent a letter stating that Aadhaar should no longer be considered a valid document for proving date of birth. Following this UIDAI letter, the EPFO, in its circular on January 16, stated that Aadhaar is no longer accepted for correcting the date of birth.
The documents that can be submitted for changing the DoB in EPF account are the following:
- Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
- Marksheet issued by any recognized Government Board or University. School Leaving Certificate
- (SLC)/ School Transfer Certificate (TC)/ SSC certificate containing Name and Date of Birth Certificate based on the service records of the Central/State Government Organizations.
- In the absence of proof of date of birth as above, Medical Certificate issued by Civil Surgeon after examining the member medically and supported with an affidavit on oath by the member duly authenticated by a Competent Court.
- Passport
- PAN by IT department
- Central/ State Pension Payment Order
- CGHS/ ECHS/ Medi-Claim Card issued by Centre/ State/ UTs Govts./ PSUs having Photo & Date of Birth
- Domicile Certificate issued by the Government.
According to the UIDAI letter, Aadhaar is recognised as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address for an Aadhaar Holder. But it cannot be used as Date of Birth (DoB) proof. The courts in the country have also said that Aadhaar is a proof of identity but it cannot be used as a proof of date of birth.
The UIDAI letter also points out an Office Memorandum dated 20.12.2018 from MeitY through UIDAI. This memorandum states that “An Aadhaar number can be used to establish the identity of an individual through authentication but, by itself, it is not considered as proof of date of birth.”
