As awareness about organ transplantation increases, the city has witnessed a rapid rise in such procedures. While kidney, liver, and lung donations have been common, heart transplants have been comparatively slower to gain momentum.
However, with the latest advancements in medical facilities, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur has received approval from the health department to conduct heart transplants. AIIMS Nagpur will be the second heart transplant center in the country, following after AIIMS Delhi.
With heart attack cases increasing in the city, patients will no longer need to travel to metro cities for a transplant and can get it done here. The then executive director of AIIMS
Dr. Hanumantha Rao signed an MoU with Tirupati Institute to start heart transplant. A proposal to approve the heart transplant was sent to the director of health services. On Tuesday, AIIMS received a letter from the director approving the transplant for the next five years.
This will soon lead to heart transplants.
