Dr. Sanjay Deshpande, a well-known sexologist and counselor, presented an enlightening session titled “Pyar Ke Side Effects” (Love’s Side Effects) on the eve of Valentine’s Day at Tirpude College of Social Work. Hundreds of eager listeners tuned in as he uncovered complexities and potential ‘side effects’ of love.
According to Dr. Deshpande, “love goes beyond stolen glances and intense encounters, challenging the idealized perception of love as solely driven by physical attraction. He stated, ‘True love thrives on a deeper connection, where emotional compatibility and shared values take centerstage.”
Side effects lile breakups, financial strains, and the crucial topic of sexual health were addressed. “Understanding possibilities of break up and preparing for it is vital. Love is a journey with your heart and head engaged,” Deshpande expressed.
Misguided by the notion that physical intimacy equates to true love, many young girls endure emotional and physical abuse in toxic relationships, believing they are destined to last at any cost. he said. “The belief that love happens only once is a romantic, poetic notion, but not a reality.” Utilizing scientific findings and real-life examples, he illustrated that people can encounter genuine love multiple times throughout their lives. Dr. Deshpande advised against allowing anyone to convince you that enduring abuse is synonymous with true love. “A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and open communication.” The session witnessed a lively exchange of ideas, with students actively participated by asking questions and sharing their experiences. College principal Swati Dharmadhikari, along with event coordinator Shilpa Puranik and Sandhya Satpute, contributed to the discussion, enhancing the dialogue with their unique perspectives.
