Mostly, it’s the batsmen who grab the limelight by hitting some big shots and scoring at a breathtaking rate, however, there have been occasions when the bowlers too have come to the party and given the fans a reason to rejoice. One such moment is when a bowler picks up a hat-trick, i.e. three wickets in as many deliveries. It usually doesn’t happen much when it comes to world cricket, but it’s a different story with the Indian Premier League – there’s been a total of 22 hat-tricks in the 16 seasons we have had so far.
Here’s a list all those hat-tricks for you:
1. Lakshmipathy Balaji, CSK vs KXIP, 2008:The smiling assassin took three wickets on the last three balls of the match, with KXIP batsmen trying to score the required 27 off the last over. Balaji dismissed Irfan Pahan, Piyush Chawla, and Vikram Singh. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his figures of 5 for 24.
2. Amit Mishra, Delhi Capitals vs Deccan Chargers, 2008: Same season, similar situation – the Chargers required 15 runs off the last over to win the game. They went all out to get the runs, but Mishra turned the game in his team’s favour by picking up three wickets off his firstthree deliveries of the over – Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh were his scalps.
3. Makhaya Ntini, CSK vs KKR, 2008: The third hat-trick of the season was taken by another Chennai bowler. Despite not being in the same over, the South African speedster picked up three wickets in three of his consecutive deliveries. He dismissed Saurav Ganguly on the last ball of his first spell and Debabrata Das and Mike Hussey on the first two balls of his second spell.
4. Yuvraj Singh, Punjab Kings vs RCB, 2009:Like Ntini, Yuvraj too got a hat-trick by picking up three wickets in two different overs. The batsmen he accounted for were Uthappa, Kallis, and Boucher – quite an impressive list!
5. Rohit Sharma, Deccan Chargers vs Mumbai Indians, 2009: Before Rohit went on to captain MI to five IPL titles, he was the one who picked up a hat-trick against them. He went on to dismiss Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy to help his team win the game by 19 runs.
6. Yuvraj Singh, Punjab Kings vs Deccan Chargers, 2009: Yuvraj Singh became the first bowler to take two hat-tricks in the IPL (that too in the same season). He dismissed Gibbs, Symonds, and Venugopal Rao to register this feat.
7. Praveen Kumar, RCB vs Rajasthan Royals, 2010: In IPL 2010, Praveen Kumar became the first RCB bowler to register his name in the list of bowlers to take a hat-trick. He dismissed Damien Martyn, Sumit Narwal, and Paras Dogra to skittle the Royals out for a mere 92.
8. Amit Mishra, Deccan Chargers vs Punjab Kings, 2011: After Yuvraj, Amit Mishra became the second bowler to take two IPL hat-tricks, against Yuvraj’s Punjab. The leggie dismissed Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris and dashed Punjab’s hopes of making it to the playoffs that year.
9. Ajit Chandila, Rajasthan Royals vs Pune Warriors, 2012: Playing just his first IPL season, Chandila made sure that he made it a season to remember. He picked up the wickets of Saurav Ganguly, Jesse Ryder, and Uthappa to register the only hat-trick of the 2012 season.
10. Sunil Narine, KKR vs Punjab Kings, 2013: The mystery spinner from West Indies baffled the Punjab Kings’ batsmen and picked up the first-ever hat-trick for KKR. Narine dismissed David Hussey, Azhar Mahmood, and Gurkeerat Singh to pick up three wickets on consecutive deliveries.
11. Amit Mishra, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Pune Warriors, 2013: Mishra registered a hat-trick of hat-tricks while playing against Pune. He dismissed Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda to help his side triumph by 11 runs, after making an important 30 with the bat.
12. Pravin Tambe, Rajasthan Royals vs KKR, 2014: After getting Manish Pandey stumped off a wide ball, Pravin Tambe dismissed Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate off back-to-back deliveries to register his first hat-trick and help his team romp home by 10 runs.
13. Shane Watson, Rajasthan Royals vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2014: After Tambe, Watson became the second bowler from Rajasthan to pick up a hat-trick in IPL’s seventh season. He bowled Shikhar Dhawan off the last ball of his first spell and came back to dismiss Moises Henriques and Karn Sharma off the first two balls of his second spell.
14. Axar Patel, Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Lions, 2016: In his second over, Patel had taken three wickets, but since there was a dot ball in between the first and the second wicket, it wasn’t a hat-trick. However, the feat didn’t elude him for long, as he dismissed Jadeja off the very first ball of his second spell. He had earlier dismissed Dinesh Kartik and Dwayne Bravo.
15. Samuel Badree, RCB vs MI, 2017: RCB had just 142 to defend, but Badree still made a match of it by dismissing Parthiv Patel, Mitch McClenaghan, and Rohit Sharma off consecutive deliveries and registering the first hat-trick of IPL 2017.
16. Andrew Tye, Gujarat Lions vs Rising Pune Supergiants, 2017: By picking up a hat-trick on his IPL debut, Andrew Tye registered his name in the history books. He dismissed Manoj Tiwari, Ankit Sharma, and Shardul Thakur to achieve this feat.
17. Jaydev Unadkat, Rising Punesupergiants vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2017: With 13 runs required in the final over, SRH were very much in the game till the end of the 19th over. However, Unadkat spoiled their party by dismissing Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar off consecutive deliveries. He went on to bowl a hat-trick maiden.
18. Sam Curran, Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals, 2019: The English allrounder dismissed Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, and Sandeep Lamicchane to help his team defeat Delhi by 14 runs and register the first hat-trick of IPL 2019.
19. Shreyas Gopal, Rajasthan Royals vs RCB, 2019: The match might not have produced a result because of rain, however, it became an encounter for Shreyas Gopal to remember for life. After all, it’s not every day that you get Kohli and de Villiers off back-to-back deliveries and top it up with the wicket of Stoinis off the very next ball.
20. Harshal Patel, RCB vs MI, 2021: Patel’s slow cutters got him quick wickets – Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Rahul Chahar were deceived by Patel’s pace. It helped Patel register his name as the third RCB bowler to pick up a hat-trick.
21. Yuzvendra Chahal, Rajasthan Royals vs KKR, 2022: The game was very much in the balance till Chahal came in to bowl the 17th over of the 2nd innings. He dismissed Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi, and Pat Cummins to pick up a hat-trick and swing the match in RR’s favour.
22. Rashid Khan, Gujarat Titans vs KKR, 2023:Khan proved his brilliance yet again by picking up the lone hat-trick of last season. He accounted for the wickets of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur.
Fun Fact: Only four of these hat-tricks ended up in a losing cause showcasing how significant they are in turning the tide of the game!
