The incidence of traffic rule violations has been on the rise in the city over recent years. Despite imposing hefty fines on car drivers for breaking the rules last year, there has been little improvement in discipline.
Allegations were made against policemen in the past for extorting money under the guise of issuing challans to defaulting car drivers.
This led to frequent clashes between officers and drivers. To mitigate such incidents, the government introduced the e-challan system in 2016.
Despite this, fines are issued through an e-challan machine to vehicle owners, who then must pay the fine to the police (traffic) department or through a mobile app within two weeks.
However, many defaulters procrastinate in paying these fines, leading to outstanding amounts totaling in crores of rupees.
