Google dismissed rumors of Gmail’s closure after a screenshot circulated, claiming the service would end on August 1st. The image alleged Gmail would cease email functions. However, Google clarified that Gmail remains operational, debunking the false claims propagated on social media.
“After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close. As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service. This means Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” the screenshot read.
The misinformation gained traction on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with some attributing the decision to alleged controversies surrounding Google’s AI image tool, Gemini. However, tech experts swiftly debunked these claims, clarifying that Google was only discontinuing the HTML version of Gmail, not the entire email service. This HTML version, primarily used in low-network areas, was indeed shut down in January 2024.
One such expert, Marsha Collier, a tech educator, emphasized that the standard @gmail service remains fully operational. The clarification underscores the importance of verifying information before spreading it, especially in an age where rumors can quickly proliferate on social media. Google’s statement reaffirms Gmail’s continued presence as a cornerstone of online communication.
