In a significant effort towards addressing the concerns of construction workers, Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) organized the “Bandhkaam Kaamgar Jagrukta Melava” on 27th Feb 2024 at Utkarsh Hall, MorBhavan, Vidarbha Hindi SahityaSammelan.
The event commenced with an insightful overview and context provided by Mr. Nitin Meshram, Project Lead (YUVA), setting the tone for the impactful discussions that followed construction workers from various thiyas/nakas shared their grievances, emphasizing issues such as the challenge in obtaining the mandatory 90 days’ certificate, inadequate space at thiyas to stand, and the lack of basic facilities such as toilets for women.
Honorable Mr. RajdeepDhurve, Assistant LaborCommissioner,Nagpur graced the occasion and guided the session, shedding light on the administration’s initiatives for the welfare of construction workers. Mr. Dhurve highlighted the simplification of the registration process at the BOCW board and the proposals for shelters at nakas/thiyas awaiting approval. He announced the identification of close to 2500 laborers at various Nakas/thiyas in Nagpur, with distributed books facilitating the registration process at the BOCW Welfare Board. The ongoing process of identification of the construction workers at the naka level was also emphasized.
Mr. Dhurve urged construction workers to come forward and take advantage of the registration process, accessing social protection schemes. During the program, labour cards were distributed to construction workers, marking a crucial step in ensuring their rights and benefits.
The event saw expressions of support and perspectives from Ms Kiran Thakre, Ms RanjanaBhagat, Mr Anil, Mr YuvrajFulzule, and NileshKhadase. The substantial attendance of construction labourers from diverse nakas reflected the significance of the program.
The proceedings of the program were conducted by NileshKhadase, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Kiran Thakre.
