In a recent demonstration of medical excellence, the 895-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre celebrated remarkable success in overcoming suicide attempts. The Emergency Department of Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre, Wanadongri, received a 30-year-old male from Hingna, brought in by relatives following a suicide attempt involving hanging. Despite severe airway injuries post-hanging, the dedicated medical team, led by Dr. Rakesh Bhaisare, successfully resuscitated the unconscious patient. He was subsequently transferred to the 65-bedded SMHRC Intensive Care Unit under the care of Dr. Neha Agarwal, ICU Incharge.
In many medical-legal cases, hospitals may hesitate to admit or treat such patients; however, SMHRC, following the vision of Shri.Dattaji Meghe, ensures timely care for all patients, regardless of their category.
The medical team faced challenges during intubation due to airway edema and epiglottic injury related to cervical injuries. The patient’s ICU journey involved complex critical care management, including high inotropic support and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring tracheostomy. Despite these obstacles, the ICU team, led by Dr. Neha Agarwal and Dr. Hemant Deshpande, successfully stabilized the patient’s condition through meticulous care. Dr. Paresh Korde (Neurosurgeon) and Dr. Jivan Kinkar (Neuro-physician) played crucial roles in managing post-hanging cervical injuries and neurological aspects. The 24×7 critical care support was provided by Dr. Anitabh Sukhdeve, Dr. Samruddhi Tayade, Dr. Rahil, and Dr. Ajinkya. The Radiology and Pathology teams, led by Dr. Anand Hatgaonkar and Dr. Suchit Barapatre, contributed to diagnostic support.
Br. Sachin and Sr. Jyoti led the nursing and paramedical team under the supervision of Sr. Geeta Kubde (ANS), providing dedicated round-the-clock nursing care. Dr. Amita Kamdi (Psychologist) rendered psychological counselling. The Psychiatry team led by Dr. Abhijeet Faye provided Psychiatric backup. Non-clinical administrative support was provided by Dr. Noorul Ameen (Administrator) and Ms. Mansi Malekar (Floor Manager).
Dr. Vasant Gawande, SMHRC CMS, stated that the patient was discharged in stable condition with no lasting effects. This success underscores the collaborative efforts of dedicated full-time medical professionals serving with missionary zeal at SMHRC. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to TEAM SMHRC for giving their loved one a new lease on life.
Dr. Anup Marar, SMHRC Director, emphasized that this success story showcases the incredible teamwork and dedication of health professionals. Their collaborative efforts turned despair into hope, sending young lives home with renewed health and smiles. In the face of tragedy, SMHRC medical professionals exhibited unwavering resilience, proving that expertise and teamwork can indeed work wonders in saving lives.
