As the temperatures soar with the onset of summer in Nagpur, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated preparations to combat the scorching heat through its Heat Action Plan.
Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, chaired a review meeting on Wednesday to assess Nagpur’s Heat Action Plan. During the meeting, Dr. Chaudhari scrutinized the readiness of various departments to implement the plan effectively. He emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the health risks associated with heatwaves and instructed departments to utilize banners, placards, and advertisements in public places like bus stands, railway stations, and government offices for this purpose.
Additionally, Dr. Chaudhari directed the Health Department to prepare for handling heat-related illnesses, including heat strokes, in city hospitals. He emphasized coordination among departments such as Police, Health, Garden, Traffic, and MSEDCL as per the Heat Action Plan.
Nagpur is listed among the non-attainment cities under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). In accordance with CPCB directives, Nagpur’s Heat Action Plan was developed by CSIR-NEERI, and the civic body has been taking annual actions to mitigate heat-related issues and pollution. Several officials including Anchal Goyal, Additional Municipal Commissioner, and representatives from various departments attended the meeting to discuss and strategize the implementation of the Heat Action Plan in Nagpur.
