The Income Tax Department sent a notice to the Congress party of Rs 1,700 crore, including penalty and interest, for the assessment years 2017-18 and 2020-21. The notification was given hours after the Delhi High Court rejected Congress’ petitions challenging the I-T department’s tax reassessment proceedings. Congress leader Vivek Tankha confirmed this.
The Delhi High Court rejected Congress petitions challenging the beginning of tax reassessment processes by tax officials over a four-year period. The party also contested the beginning of tax reassessment proceedings for the years 2014-15 to 2016-17, which was dismissed last week.
A bench of Justices Yashwant Varma and Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav rejected the appeals in accordance with its previous decision not to interfere with the opening of re-assessment for another year.
This comes after the Congress party announced that their bank accounts had been frozen and that they were unable to conduct campaigns. “All of our bank accounts have been frozen. We cannot perform campaign work, promote our employees, or support our politicians. Our leaders cannot move from one region of the country to another. “We are unable to run our advertisements,” Rahul Gandhi stated in a press conference.
