In a significant move towards tackling the rise in high-velocity road traffic accidents, Datta Meghe Medical College (DMMC) in Nagpur recently concluded a groundbreaking two-day workshop focused on advanced management of Pelvic-acetabular injuries. Drawing participants from across the nation and even internationally from Iraq, the workshop aimed to highlight the crucial need for comprehensive care in treating these highly fatal and complex injuries.
The workshop commenced with a series of engaging lectures and discussions led by eminent specialists in the field. Esteemed orthopaedic surgeons such as Dr. Pranav Shah from Ahmedabad, Dr. Dinesh Kale from Belagavi, along with prominent Nagpur-based faculty including Dr. Alok Umre, Dr. Nirbhay Karandikar, Dr. Nitin Kimmatkar, Dr. Vikram Sapre, Dr. Ujjawal Wankhede, and Dr. Suyog Rathi, shared their extensive knowledge and insights. Dr. Anagha Kulkarni provided a unique perspective from urology on managing these complex injuries. Additionally, Dr. Cyril Mauffrey, associated with Denver Health and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, contributed significantly through an online lecture, emphasizing the critical need for swift and precise treatments for such injuries.
The second day of the workshop featured a hands-on cadaveric session in DMMC’s state-of-the-art surgical skill lab, lauded for its advanced facilities and specially prepared soft-embalmed cadavers. This practical session provided a distinctive learning opportunity, earning praise from all participants. Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Ujjawal Gajbe – Dean, Dr. Brij Singh – Vice Dean, and Dr. Trupti Balvir, HOD of Anatomy at DMMC, for their contributions to the success of the event.
Dr. Anup Marar who was nominated by Maharashtra Medical Council as Observer for this undertaking highlighted the workshop’s critical objective of equipping orthopaedic surgeons with life-saving techniques and comprehensive management plans, aimed at significantly reducing mortality rates associated with these injuries, amidst the increasing incidents of road traffic accidents leading to pelvis fractures.
Under the leadership of Dr. Aditya Kekatpure as the Organizing Chairman, with Dr. Vasant Gawande and Dr. Aashay Kekatpure serving as co-chairpersons, and Dr. Sandeep Shrivastava as the Scientific Advisor, the workshop emphasized the urgent need for specialized training within the orthopaedic discipline. The organizing team, comprising Dr. Kunal Saoji, Dr. Niket Thombre, Dr. Ajay Nenwani, and Dr. Tejas Apte, were applauded for their exemplary efforts in bringing this pivotal workshop to fruition.
Dr. Aditya Kekatpure expressed plans to organize future workshops to further raise awareness about this critical aspect of trauma care, aligning with the vision of Shri. Dattaji Meghe, Founder Chancellor of DMIHER, which is being effectively carried forward by Shri. Sagar Meghe, Principal Advisor of DMIHER.
