The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is undertaking the alignment of cement roads at approximately 30 traffic intersections across the city to enhance safety and convenience for drivers. The civic body has initiated the process of leveling these uneven junctions, which were previously overlooked during the cement concretization of major roads in phases I, II, and III. So far, a total of 129 various roads, spanning a combined length of 119.10 km, have been concretized.
According to a senior official from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Public Works Department, the leveling work was postponed due to the previous concretization of only two roads leading to the squares. In Phase-IV, the NMC is prioritizing the concretization of the remaining roads intersecting the existing ones, ensuring that all junctions or squares will be leveled accordingly.
Prominent intersections like Bajaj Nagar Square, Laxmi Nagar Square, and Khamla Square, where the road’s height isn’t aligned, will be addressed. Additionally, the cement concrete work for the 1.650 km Rabindranath Tagore Marg has been completed under Phase-III, and leveling of the square has begun. These uneven roads at major squares cause inconvenience, especially during the monsoon, leading to water accumulation. Traffic expert Raju Wagh stressed that it’s not just about inconvenience but also safety. The risk of accidents increases due to the unaligned roads. When a rider accelerates upon seeing the green signal turn amber, the uneven surface can cause loss of control and accidents. To address this issue, the NMC has committed to leveling all cement roads at junctions. This corrective action will primarily target intersections with four approaching roads, all of which have already been concretized, as well as upcoming junctions slated for concretization. Additionally, the NMC’s traffic department is actively improving the geometry of critical junctions by redesigning traffic islands.
