This initiative seeks to gather extensive information about all livestock in the State onto a single, easily accessible platform.
Animals originating from other states are barred from entering Maharashtra unless they are properly ear-tagged, aiming to curb the unlawful transportation of animals.
Starting from June 1, the sale of animals in market committees, weekly markets, and villages without ear-tagging will also be prohibited, with the objective of reducing illegal slaughter.
The objective is to compile extensive data on all livestock within the State onto a user-friendly platform. Under the National Digital Livestock Mission, the Animal Husbandry Department of the Central Government has launched the India Livestock System. This system involves registering animals with a 12-digit barcode ear-tag, which includes recording birth and death, administering preventive vaccinations and medications, treating infertility, and facilitating ownership transfers. Currently, the registration process for animals on the India Livestock System is being carried out through all veterinary institutions in the district, utilizing ear tags on the animals.
Medical assistance will only be provided to animals that have been ear-tagged. It is compulsory for all Gram Panchayats, Municipal Councils, and Municipal Corporations in the district to perform ear-tagging of livestock and register them on the Bharat Livestock System. Starting from June 1, 2024, veterinary services will exclusively be available to tagged livestock through veterinary institutions and clinics. Furthermore, buffaloes will not be permitted for slaughter in the same slaughterhouse unless they are tagged.
