Amid a shortage of cabin crew, Air India Express had to cancel 85 flights on May 9, with Air India stepping in to cover 20 routes to lessen the impact on travelers. Some employees were terminated after calling in sick, resulting in over 90 flight cancellations. “We’ll operate 292 flights today, with Air India assisting on 20 routes.
Unfortunately, 74 flights are canceled,” the airline stated, advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Passengers affected by cancellations or delays over three hours can receive a refund or reschedule at no extra cost. The 85 cancellations on Thursday account for about 20% of the airline’s daily schedule.
Earlier, 25 crew members received termination notices for calling in sick, with others asked to return by 4 pm. In response, Air India Express pledged to address concerns while taking action against disruptors.
The carrier assured passengers of efforts to minimize inconvenience and stated it would operate 283 flights that day. Air India would support by operating on 20 routes, but 85 flights remained canceled.
Passengers were urged to check for disruptions before heading to the airport and could opt for a refund or reschedule if affected.
