Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalaskar have been slapped with life imprisonment by the court in connection with the murder of social activist Dr Narendra Dambholkar. Besides inflicting life imprisonment the two were also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
Three of the five accused Dr Virendra Tawde, Vikram Bhave and Sanjiv Punalekar were acquitted by the court for want of adequate evidence against them.
Dr Dabholkar was shot dead when he was on his morning walk on August 20, 2013. The result in the case came after almost 11 years. Two people on a motorcycle shot him dead. Dr Dabholkar died on the spot. The assailants fled away from the spot.
Police had arrested 17 suspects in this connection. Virendra Tawde was first to be arrested in connection with the murder. Following his interrogation police arrested several others.
Following pressure from the people and the media the verdict came on Friday. Following inordinate delay in carrying out enquiry into the case, Dabholkar’s family members moved the High Court. CBI arrested two suspects after almost five years of the incident. Questions were being raised on the functioning of the CBI. The first decision of the court was delivered on Friday.
