People living near Ambazari lake and Nag River, affected by floods last year, have good news. MahaMetro started cleaning a part of Nag River near Krazy Castle. They’re using a machine to remove 420-meter section of Nag River near Krazy Castle. A MahaMetro spokesperson confirmed this and mentioned that they’re using an excavator inside the castle to remove silt that has collected in the riverbed over the years.
The state irrigation department of MahaMetro commenced work after a recent survey revealed that MahaMetro’s constructions for its Seven Wonders project were obstructing the water flow of Nag River at Krazy Castle.
In response to the flooding caused by the overflowing Ambazari lake on September 23 last year, the irrigation department conducted the survey.
The flash flood submerged numerous localities such as Purohit Layout, Ambazari Layout, Kasturba Layout, Samata Layout, Yashwant Nagar, Daga Layout, Corporation Colony, Dandige Layout, Shankar Nagar, and other areas downstream of Ambazari lake, particularly along Nag River. The report indicated inadequate water flow in the river, particularly near Krazy Castle, with an average carrying capacity of 103 cumecs.
The department suggests maintaining a minimum flow of 140 cumecs or 140,000 liters per second in the river. After submitting the survey report to the NMC, municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari ordered the widening of the Nag riverbed by 17 meters between Ambazari lake and Ambazari Ghat to ensure smooth water flow, especially during the monsoon. As part of the second phase of the river cleanliness plan, MahaMetro will demolish structures that have restricted the Nag river basin.
