The Maharashtra government’s State Council for Education, Research, and Training (SCERT) has proposed significant revisions to the curriculum for Classes 11 and 12. Notably, English would shift from a compulsory to a non-compulsory subject, designated as a foreign language. The new curriculum allows students to choose from a range of subjects, including two languages, four electives, and two compulsory subjects.
The initiative aims to move away from traditional stream-specific learning paths like Arts, Commerce, and Science.
This includes two languages, environmental and physical education, and four additional subjects based on their preferences.
As per the language chart provided by the SCF, students are required to choose at least one Indian language from a selection of 17 options. Additionally, the chart offers nine foreign language choices, with English being the primary selection among them.
This approach fosters a diverse educational experience and encourages interdisciplinary learning, focusing on topics such as climate change. Previously, English was mandatory from Classes 1 to 12, but the draft framework now seeks input from stakeholders until June 3.
The proposed changes reflect a collaborative effort to enhance education in Maharashtra, promoting flexibility and holistic learning to prepare students for an evolving world.
